Let your AI agent post to Instagram

Yes, an AI agent can post to Instagram through Postgale. Connect an Instagram professional account once, connect the agent with a Postgale sign-in or API key, and it can publish images, Reels, Stories and carousels, reply to comments, answer direct messages and read insights, all through Meta’s official Instagram API.

Can an AI agent post to Instagram?

Postgale is the secure layer for AI agents on social media. This page covers Instagram: what an agent can do on it, what you need, the Instagram rules Postgale applies for you, and how to connect.

Instagram has no official MCP server, and Meta’s API only publishes to professional accounts. Postgale sits between the agent and Meta: the agent sends one plain request (the caption, the media, when to post, which account) and Postgale runs Instagram’s multi-step publishing flow, checks the publishing quota, keeps the login alive and reports back when the post is live.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude and Cursor use outside tools. An MCP server is what they connect to. Postgale hosts one, so ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, VS Code and n8n can use Instagram as a tool, and a REST API for everything else.

What do you need to post to Instagram with an AI agent?

  • An Instagram professional account (Business or Creator). Personal accounts cannot publish through Meta’s API.
  • A Postgale workspace, and the account owner signing in once with Instagram login.
  • An image or video on a public HTTPS URL. Images must be JPEG. Upload a file with upload_media to get a URL, or bring your own.
  • An AI tool that can call Postgale: ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, n8n, VS Code, or your own code against the REST API.

What can the agent do on Instagram?

TaskWhat Postgale does
PublishSingle image, Reel, Story (image or video) and carousels of 2–10 items; captions up to 2,200 characters and 30 hashtags; optional first comment, collaborators, location, user tags and alt text.
ScheduleGive scheduledFor and a worker publishes at that time; the result arrives on your webhook as post.published or post.failed.
CommentsList comments and replies, reply, hide, delete, and turn comments off on a post.
MentionsRead the posts the account was tagged in.
Direct messagesList conversations, read messages and reply (text up to 1,000 characters or an attachment) inside Meta’s 24-hour window.
InsightsPost insights (reach, likes, comments, shares, saves, views; Reel watch time), account insights, follower demographics and online-followers hours.

Which Instagram rules does Postgale enforce?

  • Media is required. A text-only Instagram post is rejected before anything reaches Meta.
  • Images must be JPEG on a public HTTPS URL; Meta downloads them. Captions are cut off at 2,200 characters and 30 hashtags.
  • Carousels take 2 to 10 items, images and videos mixed. Reels and carousels are processed by Meta asynchronously; Postgale polls the container and publishes when it is ready.
  • Meta limits how many posts an account can publish per 24 hours. Postgale reads the current quota before every publish instead of guessing.
  • Login tokens last 60 days. Postgale refreshes them during the last week automatically, so an account that posts rarely does not silently expire.
  • Replies to direct messages are only allowed within 24 hours of the person’s last message (7 days with Meta’s human-agent tag). Outside that window Postgale returns a clear error and sends nothing.

Comments and messaging depend on the permissions Meta has approved for the connected app. When a permission is missing, Postgale answers with missing_permission instead of failing quietly.

How do I connect Instagram to an AI agent with Postgale?

  1. Create a Postgale workspace and open Dashboard → Accounts.
  2. Choose Connect Instagram and sign in with the account you own. Postgale stores the tokens, encrypted, and refreshes them for you.
  3. Connect your AI tool: add https://postgale.com/mcp in ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor and sign in to Postgale, or create a key under Dashboard → API keys for n8n or your own code.
  4. Ask the agent for a draft first. Turn on approval in the dashboard if a person should sign off before anything goes live.

An agent can also start the connection itself: the connect_account tool (or GET /api/v1/connect/instagram) returns a sign-in link that is valid for 10 minutes and that the account owner opens in a browser. The agent never sees the password or the tokens.

What does an Instagram post from an agent look like?

Ask your agent“Post the new product photo to our Instagram tomorrow at 9am Eastern. Caption: “The fall drop is live. Shipping Thursday.” Put the hashtags in a first comment, not the caption.”

Behind that sentence the agent calls upload_media, then create_post. The same request over the REST API:

POST /api/v1/posts (Instagram)
{
  "content": "The fall drop is live. Shipping Thursday.",
  "scheduledFor": "2026-10-22T13:00:00Z",
  "platforms": [
    {
      "accountId": "acc_instagram",
      "platformSpecificData": {
        "mediaUrl": "https://media.example.com/fall-drop.jpg",
        "firstComment": "#fall #wool #madeinusa"
      }
    }
  ]
}

Nothing has to go out unreviewed. Approval can be required per workspace, per connected account, per API key or per signed-in app; while it applies, posts wait as pending approval in the dashboard, and replies, direct messages and edits to live posts are refused. Every write the agent makes is kept in the audit log.

What can’t an agent do on Instagram through Postgale?

  • Connect a personal Instagram account. Meta’s API publishes only for Business and Creator accounts.
  • Delete a published Instagram post. Meta’s API does not allow it; Postgale returns not_supported.
  • Start a new direct-message conversation. On Instagram an agent can only reply to people who wrote first.
  • Post without an image or video.

Common questions

No. Meta does not publish an MCP server for Instagram. Postgale hosts one that publishes through Meta’s official Instagram API, so the account is never driven by browser automation or a stored password.

Only if you turn approval on. It can be required per workspace, per account, per API key or per signed-in app; posts then wait in the dashboard until a person approves them.
